BC women drop road matchup with AAC's top team

ATHENS, Tenn. -- Just two games after recording a season high for points, the Bluefield College women's basketball team was held to its season-low, with No. 10 Tennessee Wesleyan taking the 68-38 win in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening.

Bluefield (10-14, 7-9 AAC) was held to just 22.4% shooting from the field, while the Bulldogs (22-2, 14-2 AAC) converted at a 41.8% clip, including a 10-for-23 performance from beyond-the-arc. The hosts, who stand atop the AAC's standings, also held a decided advantage on the glass, 44-24.

Shelby Key led Bluefield with 10 points, being the squad's only double-figure scorer. Sharonda Tate went 4-for-8 from the floor for eight points. Destiny Tolliver was held to just five points and five rebounds on the evening.

Tennessee Wesleyan was led by 17 points from Armeka Booker, while Jenna Adams recorded 15 points and 13 rebounds for the double-double. Jara Gasper and Melanie Barker added 15 and 10, respectively, for the victors.

The lead went back-and-forth in the early going, but TWC reeled off a 9-2 run to earn a 19-9 edge with 11:06 remaining in the first half.

Bluefield had it back within single digits at 22-13 with just under seven minutes on the clock, but TWC outscored the visitors 20-9 over the final stretch for a 42-22 edge at the break.

Tennessee Wesleyan continued to attack BC, as they looked to avenge Bluefield's 59-58 overtime win at the Dome Gymnasium earlier in the season. The lead jumped to as many as 36 on the night, and Bluefield was not able to make any sizeable run, taking the 68-38 defeat.

Head Coach Corey Mullins' squad will return to the Dome Gymnasium on Saturday, welcoming Reinhardt University for the AAC matchup. The game will serve as Bluefield's Pink Game, raising awareness for breast cancer. Tip is slated for 1 p.m.
