BC women close regular season with fourth-straight win

BLUEFIELD, Va. -- The Bluefield College women's basketball team wrapped up its regular-season slate in grand fashion Thursday evening with a 62-59 win over Milligan College at the Dome Gymnasium. The team honored its three seniors--Tempestt Lewis, Sharonda Tate and Destiny Tolliver--following the game.

Bluefield, which moved to 14-15 overall and 10-10 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play thanks to its fourth-straight win, trailed for nearly the entire first half before the teams went punch-for-punch over the final 20 minutes.

After seven ties and 10 lead changes in the second half, BC edged the Buffaloes thanks to a late spark from sophomore Valerie Lebedeva. Entering the game for the first time with 5:25 remaining, the guard went 3-for-3 down the stretch for eight points. Lebedeva answered a pair of game-tying triples from Milligan's Callie Cox with treys of her own, to put BC back on top.

Chelsey Weddle added a score to pull the visitors within one at 60-59, but Tolliver's jumper with 1:23 remaining served as the final points of the night. Milligan, which fell to 10-17 on the season and 9-10 in AAC play, forced a trio of BC turnovers in the final minute, but could not convert on its final possessions.

Tolliver paced Bluefield with a game-high 21 points on 10-for-17 shooting and a game-high eight rebounds. Shelby Key added 14 points, going with five steals and four rebounds. Whitney Smith tallied six assists.

Weddle and Cox led the Buffaloes with 18 and 14 points, respectively, as both went 4-for-7 from beyond-the-arc. Hayley Wyrick added 10 points, she was the only Milligan player to make it to the free-throw line, going 4-for-4. Weddle matched Tolliver for a game-high eight rebounds, while Lindsee Price matched Smith's total of six assists.

The teams played to a seven-all tie through the opening 3:30, before Milligan reeled off a 10-2 rally for the 17-9 lead.

Key and Maryah Mazyck tallied back-to-back hoops to cut the deficit in half, while two-straight Tolliver hoops pulled BC within two, 19-17 with 7:58 left in the first.

Five-straight for Milligan pushed BC's hole back to seven, but a half-closing 10-2 rally earned BC its first lead of the game, 27-26 entering halftime. Jade McDaniel bookended the run, igniting it with a three and closing it with a pair of free throws before the half.

While Cox hit a three for the first hoop of the second half, Bluefield answered with a 10-3 rally for its largest lead of the night, 37-32 with 15:19 remaining.

An 8-0 answer from Milligan placed the Buffs back on top, only to see BC respond with a 7-0 rally of its own for a four-point edge, 44-40. Milligan followed with two more threes as the lead exchanged hands once again, 46-44.

Another Tolliver hoop and a pair of free throws from Smith earned BC a 50-48 lead, only to see Cox connect on another trey and another lead change, 51-50 with 6:44 remaining. But, this would be the visitors' final lead of the night, as Smith hit a pair of free throws just over a minute later to set up the final several minutes.

Bluefield shot 46% (24-for-52) for the night, while Milligan was 36% from the floor (22-for-61). More than half of the Buffaloes shots were from distance, as they went 11-for-33 compared to 5-for-13 (38%) for the BC women. BC went 9-for-9 at the charity stripe, making the teams combine for a perfect 13-for-13 on the night from the line.

BC was outrebounded 37-30, as the Buffaloes held a 14-5 advantage in offensive boards. However, the visitors only held a 9-6 advantage in second-chance points.

Bluefield outscored Milligan 30-14 in the paint and received a 17-7 edge in points from the bench.

The win solidifies the No. 6 seed for head coach Corey Mullins' team. Milligan may add a win to its conference slate, but BC owns the tiebreaker against the Buffaloes thanks to its wins over two of the top three teams in the league.

Official seedings will be released by the conference on Sunday. The 2015 AAC Women's Basketball Tournament will take place February 25-28. It is being played in conjunction with the 2015 AAC Men's Basketball Tournament and is being held at the MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort & Convention Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
