Women's volleyball wraps up regular season

BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Bluefield College women's volleyball team wrapped up regular season play with a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at the Dome Gymnasium. In the first match the Rams fell in three sets to the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season champions. In the second match BC was dealt a heart-wrenching defeat at the hands of their crosstown rival.

In the opening game the Bryan Lions took a three-set decision, 26-24, 25-21, 25-22.

In game one the Rams held an early lead and both teams forced ties until the score was in the teens. Bluefield went ahead 21-18 at which time Bryan called time. BC got to within a point of winning the game on a kill by Jasmine Morrow and another by Ellen Johnson to make it 24-22. Bryan, however, scored the final four points of the set to take game one 26-24.

Game two saw the teams battle back and forth with Bluefield having as much as a three point lead on several occasions, the last coming at 20-17. Bryan tied at 20, then went on a 5-1 run to win the match.

Bluefield stormed ahead in game three and took a 7-3 lead before Bryan tied the set at 11. The Lions' first lead came at 13-2 and grew as big as five points at 18-13 before the Rams scored four unanswered to pull to within a point of the lead. It was as close as BC could get and Bryan won the game and match.

The second game of the afternoon pitted the Rams against crosstown rival Bluefield State. In an intense battle before a spirited crowd cheering on both teams the Big Blues took a five set win.

Game one belonged to the Rams 25-20 as BC led throughout.

In the second set the Rams again took the early lead and on Mikaela Hurst's kill held a five point lead, 11-6. The longest volley of the game came on a point that gave State a 23-21 lead. BC tied at 23, but the visitors scored the final to points to even the match at a game apiece.

Bluefield College took game three 25-19 and Bluefield State won game four 25-20 setting up a deciding fifth game.

In the final game Bluefield State stormed out to a 7-0 lead. Slowly Bluefield College worked its way back into the game, closing to within three at 12-9. The Lady Blues won on Tanasia's Blake kill, 15-12.

For Bluefield College Jasmine Morrow led the way against Bluefield State with 17 kills. Channel Flores had 32 assists and Ellen Johnson 20 digs.

The Rams begin Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament play Thursday in Kingsport, Tenn.
