Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

BC women drop AAC meeting with St. Andrews, 47-44

LAURINBURG, N.C. -- A scoring drought spanning nearly 11 minutes over both halves placed the Bluefield College women's basketball team in a sizeable hole which they nearly overcame, but St. Andrews claimed the Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup, 47-44 on Saturday afternoon.

Bluefield (10-13, 7-8 AAC) scored its last points of the first half on a Destiny Tolliver bucket with 9:43 on the clock, allowing St. Andrews to build a 29-11 lead at the break.

Tolliver halted the drought 1:35 into the second half and Bluefield began to mount a comeback. The Lady Rams trailed by 19 after Alexis Redd responded with a three on the other end, but an 18-2 run for BC made it just a three-point game, 34-31 with 11:01 remaining.

St. Andrews responded by outscoring Bluefield 8-2 over the following five minutes, as the Lady Rams hit another cold stretch.

Bluefield mounted yet another charge though, this time pulling even at 42-all thanks to a 9-0 run. Tolliver bookended the run with hoops, while Whitney Smith added a bucket and Jade McDaniel knocked down a triple.

Mazyck squared the game again at 44-44 with 1:32 remaining, but St. Andrews knocked down three free throws down the stretch and Bluefield was not able to convert from the field on its last three possessions.

Tolliver led Bluefield with 14 points and Mazyck added 10 as well as five assists. Tolliver's streak of three-straight double-doubles was broken, leading the team with eight rebounds, but BC lost the rebounding battle by a sizeable margin, 56-31.

St. Andrews was led by Juliette Love, who tallied 12 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. The Knights split their rebounds evenly, 28 coming on both the offensive and defensive glass.

Bluefield ended the afternoon 18-for-54 (33.3%) from the field, compared to 17-for-62 (27.4%) by SAU. But, the hosts were able to get to the free throw line, scoring eight more than BC at the stripe, 11-3.

The home stretch of AAC play continues on Wednesday as Bluefield treks to face Tennessee Wesleyan. BC upset previously undefeated and then No. 15 TWC in the teams' first meeting, 59-58 in overtime. The Bulldogs had since reeled off 12-consecutive wins, but lost to (RV) Union on Saturday, 68-66. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
