BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Bluefield College volleyball team opened its 2014 home slate with a 3-1 defeat to Concord University, Thursday night at the Dome Gymnasium.

Bluefield falls to 1-4 on the year while the Mountain Lions move to 5-2.

The teams matched up closely during the opening set, and stood at 14-all before CU began to make its move and eventually claim the 25-21 win.

Bluefield gained a slight 4-2 edge to begin the second set, but Concord quickly grabbed a 6-4 lead with a 4-0 run. The gap spread to 15-10, then the Mountain Lions reeled off six-straight points for the overwhelming 21-10 advantage, en route to the 25-12 second set victory.

In the third, Bluefield produced its strongest hitting percentage of the match at a .368 clip. The teams stood even at 7-7, then Bluefield outscored the visitors 7-1 to grab a 14-8 lead. Concord slowly began to come back and pulled within 20-17, but the three-point deficit would be the closest CU could get as the Lady Rams closed out well with the 25-21 set win.

In the fourth, Bluefield held several slim leads early, but Concord quickly turned a 9-9 tie into a 16-11 advantage and gave the squad the advantage it needed to take the final set 25-17 over BC.

Bluefield was paced by
Jasmine Morrow's 14 kills, while
Mikaela Hurst followed with eight of her own while hitting at a .350 percentage.
Carly Whitham posted a team-high 18 digs, and Morrow and
Lexie Mocarski added 17 and 11, respectively, for the Lady Rams.
Kaitie Shaver logged 13 assists while
Channel Flores chipped in 11 of her own.

The Lady Rams return to the road on Tuesday, traveling to face Kentucky Christian. The contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
