Five-run first inning leads Bears past Rams

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The hosting Shawnee State University Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead through one inning on Saturday, and went on to claim a 9-5 win over Bluefield College in Mid-South Conference baseball action at Branch Rickey Park.

The Rams used home runs from Kahlin Villines and Zac Russell-Myers to cut into the deficit, but couldn't pull closer than two on the afternoon.

Russell-Myers took his fourth-straight losing decision (4-4), allowing nine runs on 11 hits. He struck out six on the day.

The Bears' Wisner Mason earned the win to improve to 8-1 on the year.

Both teams had three players with two-hit games.

Three hits and three walks in the first frame allowed the Bears to grab a quick 5-0 lead.

Villines sent his eighth home run of the year to left-center, driving in three and pulling BC within two, 5-3. Jacob Wright singled to begin the inning and Sawyer McLamb followed by reaching on a walk. Two outs later, Villines tallied his home run.

A walk and then back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the third helped the Bears plate two more for a 7-3 lead.

Russell-Myers tried to help his own cause by leading off the top of the fifth with a solo home run, while BC tallied its final run in the ninth and also left the bases loaded.

SSU sscored single runs in the sixth and eighth innings for the 9-5 final.

Five different Bears tallied single RBIs on Saturday, while Villines led BC with his three-run home run. Timmer earned an RBI as he was hit by a pitch to bring in the Rams' final run.

The teams face off once again on Sunday, with the doubleheader beginning at noon.
