PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The Bluefield College baseball team had its 13-game win streak snapped by University of Pikeville, Saturday afternoon, as the hosting Bears took game one 9-5 and then edged BC 4-3 in 10 innings in game two.
Game 1
Bluefield lept out to a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat.
Tyler Rome provided a leadoff single and
Sawyer McLamb followed with a double to deep center field, driving in Rome for the opening run. Two more doubles in succession--one from
Jacob Schober and one from
Jacob Wright--scored two more for BC.
The Bears posted a pair of runs in both the second and third frames to overtake the lead, 4-2, on starting pitcher
Zac Russell-Myers.
Bluefield stranded a pair of runners in the fifth, then UPike struck for four hits and three runs in the bottom half of the frame, upping their lead to 7-2.
Two more runs from the hosts in the sixth inning extended the Rams' deficit to seven, 9-2.
Kahlin Villines reached base on an error to lead off the seventh, while Rome followed with a walk to reach base. After a fly out and a strike out, Schober placed a single in right-center field and scored the BC pair on base, brining his RBI total to three for the game.
Dylan Cole came on in relief in the seventh, retiring UPike in order in the seventh, then got out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth to hold the Bears advantage at 9-4.
Two Rams reached base in the top of the ninth, but Bluefield couldn't muster a rally and UPike took the 9-4 win and snapped BC's win streak of 13 games.
Game 2
Per Mid-South Conference doubleheaders, game two was slated to be seven innings, but with the team's knotted at two, the game went on.
Bluefield once again scored first, as a double from
Tyler Timmer then a single from
Tyler Lundgren earned the Rams a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
The advantage didn't last though, as UPike came back with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the frame.
The next scoring action came in the fifth for BC, with Villines leading off with a single. Villines advanced to third on a wild throw from the Bears' catcher, then scored as
Chris McCollister hit a sacrifice fly to square the game, 2-2.
The Bears looked to break the tie in the sixth, but a strikeout from starting pitcher
Kenneth Miranda left the bases loaded for UPike.
Bluefield stranded two more in the top of the seventh and Miranda retired UPike in order in the bottom of the seventh to push the game to extras.
Neither team threatened in the eighth, then BC tacked on a run in the ninth.
Lundgren welcomed a new pitcher with a double, and a sacrifice bunt advanced pinch runner McLamb to third base. A fielders's choice by McCollister scored McLamb to put BC up, 3-2.
Miranda allowed a leadoff single and
Cory Niten came on in relief.Â
A walk and sacrifice bunt moved the Bears' lead runner to third, and a sacrifice fly squared the game once again, 3-3. a fly out moved the game to the tenth.
BC was retired in order, and UPike took advantage in the bottom half. A single and sacrifice bunt put the Bears in scoring position, then a single clinched the walk-off win.
