MSC sweep over Cumberlands gives Rams 11-straight wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Bluefield College baseball team continued its hot start to the 2014 season on Saturday, taking both games of a doubleheader against University of the Cumberlands to sweep the Mid-South Conference opening series, 3-0.

The Rams took game one by a 4-2 margin before shutting out the Patriots for the second time in three games with a 4-0 win in the finale.

The wins push BC's record to 11-2, having won their last 11 games. The longest win streak on record—dating back to 2004—is 12-straight wins in 2010. It's also the first time BC has opened conference play with a series sweep since 2010, when the Rams opened AAC play with three wins over Reinhardt University.

Daniel Copeland, who is batting .395 so far this season, went 4-for-7 in the two games and drove in three runs.

Kenneth Miranda pitched eight innings for the Rams in the first game of the double-dip, allowing just two runs on eight hits. He struck out three and improved his record to 2-1 on the year. Cory Niten closed the ninth frame, striking out two for his second save of the season.

Ryan Shockey pitched the finale, logging the complete-game shutout—the second such game for the Rams in the series as Zac Russell-Myers did so in Friday's nine-inning opener. Shockey allowed just six hits and struck out six Patriots en route to a 3-0 record on the mound.

Game 1
The Rams did all of their damage in the second inning to grab a 4-0 lead. Jakob Schober led off with a single to right field, while Jacob Wright followed with a double and advanced Schober to third base.

A third straight hit for the Rams to open the inning—a Copeland single to left—plated Schober for the first run of the game and advanced Wright to third base.

Tyler Timmer reached on an error and Wright scored to make it 2-0, while a Lundgren single to right field brought in Copeland and Timmer.

A Rams fly out and double play closed any further threat for the Rams.

The Patriots tried to put together a rally late in the game, as three hits in the bottom of the seventh led to a pair of runs.

In the bottom of the eighth, Cumberlands led off with a single from Claudio Valencia. The Rams got the first out with a pop out to short, while Tyler Lundgren fired a strike to second base to catch Valencia's attempt to steal. A fly out to center ended the frame, then Niten wrapped up the ninth by retiring the Patriots in order.

Game 2
In game two, the Rams spread out their runs, scoring in three different innings.

Once again, Bluefield started by scoring in the second inning. Schober reached on a misplayed grounder, while the bases became loaded thanks to singles from Copeland and Timmer A sacrifice fly from Lundgren scored Schober and earned the Rams a 1-0 lead.

Bluefield tacked on two more runs in the fourth, with Schober once again leading off the inning. This time, he singled to center and Wright followed with a double to left field. A Copeland single scored Schober then a Timmer single plated Wright for the 3-0 lead. The Patriots made a change on the mound and got out of the jam allowing no more runs.

The Patriots threatened in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of hits, but stranded both runners on base.

The final run of the ball game came in the fifth. Chris McCollister earned a leadoff walk and Russell-Myers followed with a bunt for a single. A sacrifice bunt from Schober advanced both Schober and Russell-Myers. After a groundout, an infield single from Copeland allowed McCollister to cross the plate.

The Patriots only managed one hit the rest of the way as Shockey cruised to the win on the mound.

Bluefield's plays a single game at Emmanuel College on Tuesday before contesting a doubleheader against Toccoa Falls on Wednesday.
