Baseball takes first two from Benedict College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Bluefield College baseball team took both games of its doubleheader with Benedict College on Friday afternoon by margins of 7-3 and 6-3.

Zac Russell-Myers and Jacob Wright led the comeback win in game one, tallying three RBIs apiece, while Cory Niten picked up the win by pitching the final two innings.

Daniel Copeland and Tyler Timmer led the Rams' offense in game two, as both drove in a pair of runs. Ryan Shockey pitched six innings in the winning effort.

Game 1
Benedict struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to three hits. Tyler Lundgren halted the Tigers' further threat to score as he caught Robert Jones stealing second on a first and third situation.

Bluefield was held to just one hit through five innings, before Wright and Russell-Myers hit back-to-back homers to square the game at two.

The hosts reclaimed the lead in the home half of the sixth as Kevin Davis led off with a triple and crossed the plate on a double which followed.

But, the Rams found their swing in the seventh as they scored five runs on four hits.

Timmer started the inning with a single and Lundgren followed with a walk. Kahlin Villines grounded out to first, advancing both runners. After Ben Rife was walked to load the bases, Sawyer McLamb was hit by a pitch to make it 3-3.

Wright followed with a double to left-center, bringing in both Lundgren and Rife. Russell-Myers matched Wright once again with a double of his own to bring McLamb and Wright across the plate for the 7-3 advantage. A double play got the Tigers out of the inning.

After Benedict's first two batters were retired in the seventh, the Tigers tried to rally as the bases became loaded with a single and a pair of walks. But, a fly out to center ended the threat and gave BC the win.

Game 2
The Tigers once again struck first, bringing two across the plate in their first at-bat.

Bluefield answered much quicker this time though, as Copeland slammed a two-run homerun after a Jacob Schober double.

The Rams broke the two-all tie in the bottom of the third inning. Russell-Myers singled down the left field line, then stole second base. A Schober single brought home Russell-Myers for the 3-2 lead.

Bluefield added another run in the fourth inning with two out. Villines singled following a double play, before a pair of Rams were walked to load the bases. Villines crossed home on a wild pitch to make it 4-2.

Two more runs scored in the fifth inning for BC, as a Timmer double brought in both Russell-Myers and Schober.

The Tigers scored one run in the home half of the sixth, following a leadoff walk and then a double from Elisha McDaniel.

Shockey pitched six innings and struck out six, with two of the three runs scored on him being earned. He gave up four hits en route to his second win on the year.

Bluefield and Benedict face off again tomorrow in another doubleheader. Game one is slated to start at noon once again.
