Lady Rams drop MSC opening doubleheader at Campbellsville

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Bluefield College softball team dropped both games of its Mid-South Conference opening doubleheader on Friday afternoon against Campbellsville University by scores of 2-0 and 6-1.

Bluefield drops to 0-4 on the young season, while the Lady Tigers move to 13-3 overall and 2-0 in MSC play.

Game 1:
The Lady Tigers wasted no time in posting runs on the scoreboard, as Kristin Benton hit a leadoff solo shot to center. Shelby Ray was hit by a pitch, and later scored on a BC error.

BC starting pitcher Anna Davis settled in following the first inning though, and allowed just one hit the rest of the way. She walked one and struck out one in her five innings of work, as the game had a delayed start and was trimmed to a five-inning game due to concerns of darkness and completing both games.

Bluefield's Kattie Evans began the game with a single, but BC's next hit wouldn't come until their final at bat.

The Lady Rams tried to rally in their final at-bats, as Aline Uehara and Natasha Smith had back-to-back singles to start the fifth frame. After a fly out for the second out, the runners advanced on a wild throw, but a groundout wrapped up game one with CU taking the 2-0 win.

Game 2:
Bluefield stranded a pair of runners to open the game, while Campbellsville turned an inning-opening walk into a run in the bottom of the first.

The Lady Tigers tacked on three runs in the bottom of the second, while BC was held scoreless until Brienna Sparks hit a solo home run over the center field fence in the top of the sixth inning to make it 4-1.

However, CU added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh and took the 6-1 victory in game two.

Junior Kasey Holcomb had a strong game for BC, claiming three of the team's seven hits, including a double.

Sparks was also in the circle for the Lady Rams, throwing for five innings. The freshman allowed a pair of earned runs on six hits, while Uehara pitched the sixth and allowed one earned run and a pair of hits.

BC faces St. Catharine on Saturday, with doubleheader action starting at 1 p.m.
