Rams win MSC season opener 6-0, move win streak to 9

Senior Zac Russell-Myers pitched a complete-game shutout to earn BC a win in its first conference game of the season.

Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – A five-run first inning gave senior pitcher Zac Russell-Myers all the cushion he'd need on Friday afternoon, as the Bluefield College baseball team picked up a 6-0 win over University of the Cumberlands in the 2014 Mid-South Conference opener.

After dropping its first two games of the season, Bluefield has now won its last nine outings, the program's longest streak since taking 12-straight in 2010.

Russell-Myers went the distance on the mound for the Rams to move his record to 3-0 this season. The Advance, N.C., native allowed just two hits and struck out seven Patriots in his nine innings of work.

After Tyler Rome was hit by a pitch to begin the ballgame, Sawyer McLamb singled for BC's first of seven hits in the game. Jakob Schober delivered a single with one out to drive in the first run and earn BC a 1-0 lead, but the Rams weren't done there.

After a popout, Bluefield posted four runs with two out as starting pitcher Kevin Schubert hit another batter, threw a pair of wild pitches and walked three batters. Kahlin Villines supplied the third hit of the inning, a single to left, driving in Daniel Copeland.

The Patriots replaced Schubert with T.J. Campbell and got out of the jam with BC stranding three runners.

Russell-Myers settled in in the bottom of the frame, getting a pair of strikeouts.

Campbell also found a groove, as he held the Rams scoreless and to just three hits in his seven innings of action.

The Rams' final run came in the eighth inning, as Jacob Wright doubled off a hit from deep right-center. Copeland followed with a single to right, while a Tyler Timmer sacrifice fly brought Wright across the plate.

Russell-Myers remained strong and closed out Patriots in order in the final frame to seal the complete game shutout.

The Rams are back at it on Saturday, playing a doubleheader against the Patriots. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
