BC falls as Charleston connects from three

The hosting Golden Eagles made 11 of their 21 total field goals from three-point range.

CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- The Bluefield College women's basketball team dropped its Wednesday meeting with University of Charleston, as the hosting Golden Eagles connected on 11-of-32 three-point attempts en route to the 58-41 victory.

The loss drops BC to 5-8, while Charleston ups its mark to 6-2.

Maryah Mazyck led BC with 13 points, while Destiny Tolliver chipped in 10 points and added a team-high six rebounds.

UC used a balanced attack, as 13 of its 14 players who saw floor time scored on the night. M Saunders paced the victors with 10 points and also grabbed a game-high seven boards, as UC held the 41-29 edge on the glass.

BC scored the first six points of the night, but Charleston began to dial it up from long range and quickly pulled even at 8-8 behind a pair of triples.

Tolliver knocked down a jumper and Shelby Key added a free throw to earn the visitors a 14-11 lead, but UC outscored BC 21-5 over the final 11:39 of the first half.

Charleston knocked down four threes during the span, while BC struggled from the field, going 1-for-15, including 0-for-6 from three-point range.

Bluefield scored the first four out of the break, but a put-back and another three sandwiched with a Mazyck hoop pushed the deficit back to double-digits, 37-25 with 12:41 remaining in the game.

BC remained within striking distance, but a 12-0 rally from the Golden Eagles opened their lead to 56-34 with just 3:25 to play.

The Lady Rams scored seven of the game's final nine points as CU took the 58-41 win.

Charleston hit 11 of its 32 (34.4%) three-point attempts, while going 21-for-56 (37.5%) from the field overall. Eight different Golden Eagles connected from three-point range on the night. Bluefield was 15-for-47 (31.9%) from the floor, going just 3-for-15 from distance.

BC managed 11 steals as UC had 17 total turnovers on the evening, but BC only converted those giveaways into 10 points. Charleston, however, scored 19 points on BC's 16 turnovers.

Bluefield will conclude its schedule for the 2014 calendar year on Friday, taking on No. 5 Campbellsville University at 6 p.m. BC was held off by the Lady Tigers, 52-46 at the Dome on Nov. 28.
