TAKOMA PARK, Md. -- Destiny Tolliver posted her third-straight double-double to open the season, leading Bluefield College past Washington Adventist University, 48-46 on Saturday.
Tolliver tallied 16 points on 7-for-13 shooting and ripped down 18 rebounds, setting new career highs for both categories.
Valerie Lebedeva tossed in 10 more for BC as the only other double-digit scorer.
Bluefield led for much of the first half, only allowing Washington Adventist to gain a lead of two a couple of times. The Lady Rams were up by as many as seven after Tolliver's layin with 4:43 remaining in the first 20 minutes, but an 8-0 run earned the hosts a 23-22 lead with 1:24 on the clock. Tolliver knocked down a pair of free throws to close the half and get Bluefield a 24-23 lead.
The second half was much of the same, with neither team able to find a strong offensive rhythm. Bluefield gained a 34-27 lead at the 13:09 mark with another Tolliver bucket, but the Shock put together a 9-3 rally, pulling within one with 9:30 to play.
A more than three-minute drought followed for both teams, as the next hoop came from Lebedeva with 6:15 remaining. The Shock pulled even at 39-all with 5:06 to play, but a
Whitney Smith trey put BC back in front for good.
Bluefield led by six with just 1:28 remaining, before the hosts scored the final four points of the game. The Shock had an attempt to tie with three seconds remaining, but the shot wouldn't fall, giving BC its second road win of the early season.
Both teams struggled from the floor, Bluefield shooting 30.5% (18-for-59) and Washington Adventist just 25.9% (15-for-58). The teams also combined for 43 turnovers, Bluefield owning 24 to WAU's 19.
