BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Bluefield grabbed set one from Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Montreat College, 25-23, and looked as if it would take a 2-0 lead, but the visiting Cavaliers closed set two with an 8-2 run to level the match and then edged out BC in two more sets to claim the 3-1 win, Tuesday evening at the Dome Gymnasium.
Bluefield's record moves to 5-21 with the defeat and concludes its AAC slate with an 0-14 mark. Montreat moves to 7-21 and 5-9 in conference matches.
Bluefield raced out to a 7-3 lead in the first set and led the rest of the way. BBC held a 22-17 lead, but Montreat threatened to come back, scoring four-straight points as BC faced matach points. Bluefield finally closed it out with a
Jasmine Morrow kill, taking set one 25-23.
In set two, BC looked poised to take its second-straight set as they built an 18-12 lead. Montreat battled back once again though, this time successfully. The Cavaliers closed the set on an 8-2 run, including scoring the final five points of the set to claim a 25-23 win and equal the match, 1-1.
Appearing deflated from the Cavaliers' comeback, BC fell behind early in set three, with the visitors taking a 13-6 lead out of the gates. The Lady Rams fought from behind and pieced together a late 7-3 rally, pulling within 24-21. But, the Cavaliers used a block for the final set point and took the 25-21 victory and a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth, Bluefield fell behind once again, facing a 20-12 hole. But, the youthful team didn't throw in the towel and pieced together another charge. A 10-2 rally from the Lady Rams squared the match 22-22 down the stretch. The teams were square once again at 23, but the Cavaliers closed the door with the final two points including another block for the set and match point, 25-23.
Jasmine Morrow's nine kills led Bluefield's attack, while
Mikaela Hurst added seven kills, making just one error on 14 attempts for a .429 hitting percentage.
Ellen Johnson and
Amber Taylor-Inge added six more kills apiece.
Channel Flores logged 18 assists, and
Marissa Grice added nine more.
Defensively, Taylor-Inge registered three block assists to go with four solo blocks. Morrow had 17 digs, while Ashlyn VanDyke (13),
Lexie Mocarski (12) and Johnson (10) also had double-digit totals.
The Cavaliers were led by Kathryn Rogers' 14 kills, followed by 11 from Kara Smith. Abby Graham had 24 assists. Smith also added four block assists and a game-high 19 digs for the all-around performance. Emily Howard had seven block assists along with one solo block.
On Wednesday, BC will continue its three-game homestand to close the season, hosting UC-Beckley at 7 p.m.
