Knights slide by BC in second half, 55-44

BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Cold shooting in the second half for the Bluefield College women's basketball team allowed Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent St. Andrews to take a 55-44 win, Tuesday night at the Dome Gymnasium.

Freshman Adrianne Goodlet led BC's (4-5, 2-3 AAC) offense with 13 points on 6-for-12 shooting, while also pulling down a career-best nine rebounds. Destiny Tolliver added 12 more to go with nine boards as well, while Maryah Mazyck chipped in 11 more.

Kayla Johnson  led the way for the Knights (4-4, 1-4 AAC), scoring 17 points, capitalizing at the charity stripe by knocking down all seven attempts. Johnson also had a game-high 11 rebounds. Juliette Love added 10 points for the victors.

Bluefield took a 25-18 lead into the break, as St. Andrews connected on 7-of-29 (24.1%) attempts in the opening 20 minutes.

But, the Knights turned it around in the second half, connecting on 13-of-26 attempts while BC went cold with a 7-for-28 (25%) effort. St. Andrews scored the first 14 points of the second half to gain a 32-25 lead and never look back.

The lead grew to ten at 39-29, but Bluefield charged back with a 9-0 run to trim the deficit to just one. Tolliver led the charge with four points, while Mazyck added a hoop-and-harm and Goodlet tacked on a layin, which closed the rally.

A pair of Alana Artis hoops pushed the lead back to five, while three is the closest BC could get the rest of the way, before SAU closed the door down the stretch.

St. Andrews took advantage of 21 BC turnovers, exchanging them for 23 points. Bluefield managed 13 points from 14 SAU turnovers.

Both teams recorded 17 offensive rebounds and 21 defensive boards to be knotted 38-38 in boards, but the visitors capitalized by scoring 17 second-chance points to Bluefield's eight.

Bluefield steps out of conference on Friday, hosting Campbellsville University at 7 p.m.
