Bluefield clipped by Skyhawks, 63-55

WEST POINT, Ga. – Facing a 46-all tie, the hosting Point Lady Skyhawks reeled off a late 14-0 run en route a 63-55 Lady Rams defeat, Saturday afternoon in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.

A three by Dereese Owens squared the game at 46 and sparked the 14-0 run for Point (4-2, 2-0 AAC) which put Bluefield (3-2, 1-1 AAC) in a 57-46 hole with just 2:27 remaining in the game. Owens led the rally with seven points, en route to her game high 30 on the afternoon.

Shelby Key and Whitney Smith paced Bluefield's scoring attack with 14 points apiece. Destiny Tolliver had her streak of four-consecutive double-doubles snapped, with the senior putting up eight points while grabbing 17 of Bluefield's 35 rebounds.

Owen's 30 points came on 12-for-22 shooting, including a 4-for-8 mark from beyond-the-arc. Owens also had a team-high nine rebounds. Candace Rhodes chipped in 13 for the victors.

The teams struggled from the floor in the first half, both shooting less than 30% from the field.

The Lady Rams held a 10-6 lead following a Smith three before Point reeled off its first lengthy run of the game, 11-0. Bluefield fought back and a trey from Smith as time expired made it 22-21 for the hosts through 20 minutes.

The second half was back-and-forth early, with Point eventually opening a 43-37 lead with 7:38 remaining. A pair of Key free throws followed by back-to-back threes from Valerie Lebedeva and Adrainne Goodlet earned Bluefield a 46-43 lead, but the hosts responded with their late 14-0 run en route to the win.

Bluefield continues AAC play on Wednesday, as Head Coach Corey Mullins will return to Bryan College where he spent four seasons as an assistant. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m., with the men's game to follow.
