Bluefield edged by Tennessee Wesleyan, 3-2, in AAC play-in game

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Bluefield College volleyball team claimed a 25-19 victory in set four of Wednesday's Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament play-in game, but No. 8 seed Tennessee Wesleyan College found its attack with 11 kills in the fifth and deciding set en route to the 3-2 win, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 15-12.
 
Bluefield finishes the season with a 7-22 mark, while TWC moves to 8-21 on the year and advances to the pool play portion of the AAC Tournament.
 
Jasmine Morrow paced Bluefield's attack with 20 kills on 44 attempts. The junior had just four errors on the day, compiling a .364 hitting percentage. Freshmen Lexie Austin and Mikaela Hurst added seven kills apiece. Channel Flores tallied a game high 25 assists and Marissa Grice added 15 more.
 
On defense, Ashlyn Van Dyke led the way with a game high 16 digs, while Ellen Johnson and Flores added 13 and 11 digs, respectively. Bluefield, who averages two blocks per game, had just four blocks on the day, 2.5 coming from Amber Taylor-Inge.
 
Bluefield came out of the gates with a .318 hitting percentage in the opening set, while the Bulldogs committed 10 attacking errors in the opening set, making way for BC's 25-22 win. Bluefield began with a 5-0 lead before TWC battled tied it 9-9.
 
The teams were tied once again at 10-10, before BC reeled off a 9-3 run. Morrow had a pair of kills and Hurst added one in the rally, while TWC had four attack errors and two more service errors to help Bluefield.
 
Tennessee Wesleyan bounced back with 13 kills to just three errors in the second set to square the match with a 25-19 win. The set was tight until late, as the teams were tied 18-all, but TWC closed on a 7-1 run.
 
The third was another highly competitive set, as the teams battled to a 22-22 tie late in the set. But, TWC was able to close once again, taking three of the next four points.
 
Bluefield then responded in the fourth with a 13-kill set, while the Bulldogs compiled eight attack errors in helping the Lady Rams stay alive. Facing a 10-10 tie, BC quickly took control thanks to an 11-1 rally. Morrow had three kills in the run while Austin and Hurst added one apiece. TWC made a slight run late, but Bluefield forced the deciding set with the 25-19 win.
 
Morrow opened the fifth set with a kill, but TWC took the next three points and never allowed Bluefield to take the lead again. Morrow nailed down back-to-back kills to square the set at 11-all, but once again the Bulldogs finished the set off with a late run, this one being 4-1. Tennessee Wesleyan put together its best hitting set of the game, getting 11 kills to just one error on 24 attempts (.417) to advance in tournament play.
