Bryan spoils Senior Night, hand Rams first home loss

BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Though the Rams dominated the scoresheet by outshooting Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent Bryan College 20-6, the Lions were able to convert on three of their attempts and had an outstanding effort from keeper Josh Oldroyd to hand Bluefield its first home loss of the season and spoil the Rams' Senior Night at East River Soccer Complex. The Rams honored seniors Chris Bennett, Michael Callaghan, Dean Johnson, Jacob Mader, Matthew Plucinski, and Jefferson Watson prior to the game.

Bluefield moves to 11-6 on the year with the defeat and 5-3 in AAC matchups. Meanwhile, the Lions' record improves to 8-7-2 and 5-4 in AAC play.

Gustavo Angel Tamayo earned the Lions a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute as a foul just outside the box set up a score on the free kick.

The score remained 1-0 at halftime, with BC having a 5-2 lead in shots.

Bluefield continued to pressure in the second half, quickly earning a corner kick and shot in the first couple minutes of play.

Benjy Slator posted another shot in the 50th minute, but Oldroyd made the first of nine second-half saves.

Oldroyd made quality saves on attempts from Benjy Slator, Dean Johnson and Matthew Plucinski, to maintain Bryan's lead through the contest, while the Rams also began to settle for long-range attempts as the game wore on.

Bryan gained a 2-0 lead in the 61st minute when Roberto Picado sent a shot to the back of the net from the left side of the box.

The Lions tacked on one more in the 88th minute as Daniel Branley chipped an attempt over Oscar Hernandez, who came on in relief.

Bluefield also held a 12-5 lead in shots on goal and slim 3-2 lead in corner kicks.

The Rams close the regular season on Saturday, traveling to face Tennessee Wesleyan College at 2 p.m. as part of a women's and men's doubleheader.
