Soccer teams shut out at Rio Grande

BLUEFIELD, Va. – Both the women's and men's soccer teams were held scoreless Wednesday night, with hosting University of Rio Grande taking the opening women's game by a 2-0 margin and the men finishing with a 6-0 win over the Rams.
 
In game one, the RedStorm (5-4, 2-1 MSC) tallied markers in the 11th and 22nd minutes of the first half to open up a two-goal advantage and keep it that way for the remainder of the game. The first goal was knocked in by Carrie Mathes and assisted by Melissa Dickerson, while the second shot was a putback after an initial shot from the RedStorm hit the crossbar.
 
The BC women (5-3, 0-3 MSC) posted 10 shots in the contest, but only half were on target with Allison Keeney making all five saves for Rio Grande. Jessica Newman and Victoria Doyle had two shots apiece for BC to lead the Rams' offensive attack. The RedStorm totaled 13 shots in the game, 10 being on target. BC's Kayla Richardson made eight saves.
 
In the men's game, No. 3 Rio Grande (6-1-1, 2-0-1 MSC) was held scoreless until late in the first half, but then erupted for six goals in the final 53 minutes of action.
 
The RedStorm's first goal came on a penalty kick by Luiz Filho with 7:30 remaining in the first half, while Filho added another just 26 seconds later to push the advantage to 2-0. A third goal came with less than five minutes left in the first half, giving the hosts a 3-0 lead going into the break.
 
Rio Grande tacked on three more in the second half, including one more for Filho, en route to the 6-0 win. The RedStorm fired 24 shots in the game, 10 being on target. Bluefield (4-5, 1-2 MSC) could only record three shots in all, with two having scoring opportunities.
 
BC keeper Jefferson Watson tallied three saves and Jon Dodson had two for the victors.
 
Both BC programs are back in action on Saturday, hosting Campbellsville for another Mid-South Conference meeting. Game times are 2 p.m. for the women and 4 p.m. for the men.
