BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – Lengthy runs by the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) helped the visitors shut out Bluefield Saturday afternoon, 3-0 at the Ned Shott Gymnasium on the campus of Bluefield State College.
 
Bluefield falls to 1-8 and 0-4 in MSC play while the Patriots improve to 4-2 and snag their first MSC victory.
 
Bluefield stepped out to a 7-4 lead in the opening set, but eight straight points from the Patriots earned them a 12-7 edge which they would not relent. Bluefield was able to get within three points on a couple of occasions, but Cumberlands eased in for the 25-19 win in set one.
 
In set two, BC and UC stood tied at two-all before Cumberlands went on another brief run. Four points in a row gave the visitors a 6-2 edge, then they added four more compared to just two for BC to open up a 10-4 lead. Bluefield wouldn't get closer than five tallies the rest of the way, as Cumberlands took the 25-18 win in set two.
 
The Patriots started the third set in a fury, going up 6-0. Bluefield tried to battle back, coming within four at 18-14, but the visitors closed on a 7-2 run for the 25-16 win in the third set.
 
Bluefield was led by 
Jasmine Morrow's 11 kills and 
Sydney Spencer's 26 assists. 
Ashlyn Van Dyke and Morrow tallied 11 and 10 digs, respectively for BC.
 
Morgan Schlatter and Kelsey Eastham led UC's charge, with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Megan Ganser attacked at a solid .571 clip, posting nine kills on 14 attempts. Samantha Stuckwisch claimed 36 assists while three Patriots tallied at least 10 digs—Jennifer Philpot (10), Sydney Beck (10) and team leader Morgan Schlatter (12).
 
Bluefield continues with MSC play on Tuesday evening, hosting Pikeville at 6:30 p.m.
