Box Score BLUEFIELD, Va. -- The Bluefield College women's volleyball team opened up its 2013 home schedule in style, sweeping the visiting Golden Bears of West Virginia Tech. The Lady Rams won in straight sets, 25-19, 25-16, 25-22.
Bluefield claims its first win of the season (1-6) and also earns
Jim Butski his first career win with the Lady Rams' program. West Virginia Tech falls to 1-8 on the 2013 season.
Bluefield came out of the gates quickly, taking a 6-2 advantage. However, in what would be the theme of the evening, West Virginia Tech fought back, and pulled within a point, 8-7.
The Lady Rams separated themselves once again with a 15-11 advantage, but the Golden Bears came back to within one, 18-17.
From there, Bluefield went on a 7-2 scoring burst to claim the first set.
After several ties early in set two, the Lady Rams pulled away for the convincing victory, 25-16.
The third set would be the closest of the evening with 14 ties, including the latest at 19-all.
However, Bluefield closed out the match on a 6-3 run for the match victory.
Jasmine Morrow led Bluefield's attack with 15 kills on the evening, while hitting at a .500 clip.
Amber Taylor-Inge added nine kills, while freshman
Rachel Alley added seven more.
Freshman
Sydney Spencer claimed a game high 33 assists to help organize BC's offense. Spencer and
Ashlyn Van Dyke shared the team high for digs, with six apiece.
The Golden Bears were paced by Summer Stokley and Brianna Clark with six kills apiece, while Jaymee Hannan provided 17 assists. Haley Pauley corralled a game high nine digs.
Bluefield returns to the court Friday and Saturday, hosting Cumberland (Tenn) in a 3 p.m. game and Cumberlands (Ky.) which has a 1 p.m. start for the weekend finale.
