Five Rams claimed at least three hits apiece Wednesday evening as Bluefield struck for 23 hits in an 18-7 victory over visiting Emory & Henry at Bowen Field.
Trevor Martin produced the Rams first two-homerun game of the year, belting a pair of homers to left field. Martin went 3-for-5 on the evening, driving in four.
Christian Burton also claimed four RBIs, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Zach Russell-Myers,
Jacob Wright and
Chris Rosa each contributed four hits apiece on the evening. Rosa notched a pair of RBIs, while Russell-Myers added one.
Kahlin Villines and
Will Simpson had two RBIs a piece, while
Kaleb Long added one.
The Rams struck first in the bottom of the second, beginning with a Rosa double down the left field line. Rosa advanced to third on a stolen base and scored on a balk from Wasp starting pitcher Austin Collins. Later in the inning, Villines hit a sacrifice fly, scoring
Blaine Hill – who served as the courtesy runner for
Kaleb Long after Long reached on a walk.
Emory & Henry bounced back to knot the game 2-2 in the top of the third. Centerfielder Rosa halted the Wasps rally, throwing out Jordan Woullard as he tried to advance first to third on a single.
Bluefield opened up the ballgame in the third, plating five runs on six hits along with one Emory & Henry error. Simpson began the inning by reaching and advancing to second on a throwing error. He was quickly driven home by a
Trevor Martin double. Russell-Myers made it two doubles in a row to drive in Martin, while a Wright infield single made it first and third with no outs. Rosa claimed the Rams' fourth-straight hit ripping a single to score Russell-Myers. Burton capped off the rally, lacing a bases-clearing double to give the Rams a 7-2 advantage.
Bluefield extended its lead behind three runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth. In the fifth, the Rams pieced together hits with two outs, beginning with a
Ryan Foster double. Simpson singled to drive Foster home, while Martin hit a two-run shot for the 10-2 lead.
In the sixth, Martin hit his second consecutive home run to cap off a six-run inning on seven hits and one more Wasp miscue.
Emory & Henry scored runs in each of the final four frames, but could not get back within striking distance.
Kyle Long (5-1) went six innings for the Rams to earn the victory, giving up three runs.
Mark Gallimore threw two innings in relief and also gave up a trio of runs.
Sean Williams closed the game for the Rams, giving up one unearned tally.
Five Wasps combined to pitch on the evening, but starter Collins (1-1) took the loss. The Rams pegged Collins for seven runs, and took nine against reliever Brogan Hoover who pitched an inning and two-thirds.
The Rams return to Bowen Field tomorrow afternoon as they host Tennessee Temple. First pitch of the single, nine-inning game is slated for 2 p.m.
