Lady Rams Grab First MSC Victory

After dropping game one to the University of Rio Grande, 8-2, the Bluefield softball team earned a 5-4 win for the program's first Mid-South Conference victory. The two games were relocated to Rio Grande due to projected playing conditions.

Bluefield moves to 5-11 on the year after the split and 1-3 in MSC play. Rio Grande's record now stands at 1-5, 1-3 MSC.

Game 1: Rio Grande 8, Bluefield 2

The RedStorm sprang out to a quick 5-0 lead, scoring five runs on six hits in the first two innings of play, including a two-run homerun from Kaylee Walk.

Bluefield then found the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, as Jessica Dutka plated a pair of runs on a single. Kourtney McGrady and Megan Meismer both came in to score, having reached base on a single and a walk, respectively.

However, Rio Grande added two more in the fifth and a final run in the sixth, as they shut out the Lady Rams for the remainder of the contest.

McGrady posted two hits for Bluefield, while Dutka and Breanne Vencil added the Lady Rams' other two hits.

Aline Uehara received the loss for Bluefield, while Kimberly Hazlett took the win for the RedStorm.

Game 2: Bluefield 5, Rio Grande 4

Dutka reached on a walk to open game two, and tallied the Lady Rams' first run of the contest. She advanced on a wild pitch from RedStorm pitcher Katie Stewart before advancing to third on a McGrady single. Heather Thomas drove in Dutka on a single to left field.

Rio Grande squared the game at one in the bottom of the first, but Bluefield countered by scoring three runs on three hits in their next at bat.

Meismer began the inning with a double, then advanced on a Ciera Conkle groundout. With one out, Dutka singled to drive Meismer home. Having advanced to second on a wild pitch, Dutka came home on a dropped fly ball, still leaving Bluefield players on first and third base. Uehara singled to center to drive in Kristen Hylton from third base with two out.

Bluefield stretched its advantage to 5-1 by adding one more run in the fourth inning. Dutka began the inning reaching on a wild throw from Stewart, and advanced to third thanks to a Hylton sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch from Stewart allowed Dutka to cross home.

Rio Grande closed the Lady Rams' lead by scoring two in the fourth. Haley Gwin hit a solo homerun to begin the inning, while Kimberly Hazlett doubled and was later drove in on a single from Walk.

The RedStorm tacked on one run in the sixth inning off of Uehara, who relieved starting pitcher Meismer in the fifth frame. Uehara held Rio Grande scoreless in the seventh inning to earn the save – her second – and the 5-4 win for the Lady Rams.

Meismer (2-5) received the victory for Bluefield, while Stewart (0-2) took the loss for the RedStorm.

Dutka went 2-for-4 at the plate and added a walk and scored three runs for the Lady Rams. Dutka, Uehara and Thomas all tallied RBIs, while Meismer also claimed a pair of hits in the winning effort.

Bluefield is now scheduled to have its home opener on Friday, when they host Emory & Henry. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
