RIO GRANDE, Ohio. – The Rio Grande RedStorm, ranked No. 6 in the nation and holding the No. 2 seed in the Mid-South Conference tournament, knocked off No. 7 seed Bluefield College, 6-0, Thursday evening in quarterfinal conference tournament action.
Rio built a commanding 5-0 lead through the opening 45 minutes of action, beginning with a quick goal from the team's leading scorer Luiz Filho in the fifth minute of play. Filho also added goals in the 14
th and 21
st minutes to post his second hat trick of the season against the Rams.
William Paulino scored the RedStorm's second marker in the 13
th minute of play, while Patricio Arce contributed the final two scores for the hosts—one just 16 seconds before the end of the first half and on in the 70
th minute of action.
Bluefield only recorded two shots in the contest, both from freshman
Forrest Yates during the first half of play. Both shots were on goal, being saved by Jon Dodson.
Jefferson Watson logged the opening 60:43 in net for the Rams and made seven saves while allowing five goals.
Justin Cook closed the final 29:17 as the netminder, making seven saves and allowing one goal.
The two keepers had to face a barrage of RedStorm shots—36 in all, with 20 being on goal.
Rio also held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks. Few fouls were committed, with BC being whistled for six and Rio three.
The Rams conclude their 2013 season with an 8-10-1 overall mark, while the RedStorm continue playoff action with a 13-2-2 record.
