Box Score

BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – Bluefield College's Erik Albarran scored two goals in the first half and added one more in the second half as the BC men's soccer team shutout visiting Shawnee State University, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the East River Soccer Complex.

Bluefield levels its record at 6-6 for the season and is now 2-3 in Mid-South Conference games. Shawnee is now 4-7 overall, 1-4 MSC.

Albarran made his first tally in the 19th minute of the game. The sophomore supported an attack from freshman Hector Comacho up the middle of the field, with Comacho making the timely pass to Albarran on the left side of the box for the score.

Albarran then made his second goal in the 36th minute, capping off a well-executed possession for the Rams. Comacho once again began the play for BC, this time on the left sideline. Comacho found James Gunn near the side of the box, while Gunn then hit a cutting Albarran in front of the goal to give the Rams a 2-0 advantage.

The hat trick was completed in the 70th minute, as Albarran was assisted by his third different teammate of the afternoon. Michael Callaghan slipped Albarran a perfect pass between a couple defenders as the two led an attack in transition. SSU starting keeper Thomas Carbonari attempted to cut off the pass, but was late. Albarran beat his defenders, then chipped the ball past Carbonari to the far side of the goal for his third score of the game and his second hat trick of the season.

SSU fired off 22 shots on the afternoon, but made many attempts from long range which were well off target. The Bears only put six on the frame, all being saved by BC keeper Jefferson Watson. Carbonari made two saves and allowed three goals for SSU in 77:14. Justin Mahlmeister finished off the final 12:46 in net for the Bears.

Shawnee State earned six corner kick opportunities, while BC had five—all of which came in the first half. Shawnee played the more physical game, getting called for 12 fouls to BC's four.

Bluefield continues its five-game homestand on Wednesday, welcoming Montreat College to the East River Soccer Complex. Game time is 6 p.m.
