BLUEFIELD, Va. -- The Bluefield College volleyball team hosted the University of Rio Grande Red Storm, Thursday night, with the visitors claiming the 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-17, 27-25) at the Dome Gymnasium.
Rio Grande opened up a 9-5 advantage in the first set, forcing a Bluefield timeout. However, the RedStorm continued to push through the first set and went on a 10-4 run to extend their advantage to 19-9. The Rams scored three straight to pull within seven, but the RedStorm closed out the opener, 25-15.
Rio Grande started the second set just as quickly as the first, making head coach
Jim Butski call a timeout with the score at 9-5, RedStorm, once again. While the visitors built a 20-14 advantage, the Rams rallied behind
Steffi Dutton's serve and came within three, 20-17. But, a quick 5-0 run from Rio Grande built a 2-0 lead.
Bluefield came out of the gates quickly in the third set to gather a 9-4 edge. However, the RedStorm countered with an 11-4 rally to take a two point advantage, 15-13. The teams then traded pairs of points, tying at 15 and 17 after a Bluefield timeout.
The next tie came at 24-all, thanks to a
Jasmine Morrow kill. The two traded points again to tie at 25 before the RedStorm claimed the final two points and the 3-0 sweep, 27-25.
Morrow led the Rams' attack with 14 kills, while
Sydney Spencer and
Rachel Alley also had five kills apiece. Spencer tallied 21 assists and also added 12 digs.
Ashlyn Van Dyke compiled a game-high 22 digs for BC's defensive effort, while
Amber Taylor-Inge tallied one solo block and a pair of block assists.
The RedStorm had three players with double-digit kills, led by Betsy Schramm's 13. Four players tallied 10 digs or more, with Kayla Briley having 17.
Bluefield closes out its three-game homestand Saturday by hosting Shawnee State at 2 p.m.
