TAKOMA PARK, Md. – The Bluefield University Rams men's soccer team picked up a 3-1 non-conference victory over Washington Adventist University Tuesday evening.
Bluefield wasted little time finding the scoreboard as senior forward Sebastian Armijos opened the scoring in the 13th minute, giving the Rams a 1-0 advantage. Bluefield controlled much of the opening half, recording seven shots and six corner kicks. Freshman midfielder Brycen Kelly nearly added to the lead in the 40th minute, but his shot struck the post. The Rams carried their 1-0 advantage into halftime.
BU continued to apply pressure early in the second half. After freshman midfielder Leo Bascope had a shot miss wide in the 53rd minute, the Rams doubled their advantage in the 60th minute when Armijos found the back of the net for the second time, with Bascope providing the assist.
Just over a minute later, freshman midfielder Diego Valenzuela extended the Bluefield lead to 3-0 with his first goal of the season in the 61st minute.
Washington Adventist continued to battle, breaking through in the 87th minute and cutting the deficit to 3-1.
The Rams held on through the final minutes to secure the victory. Bluefield finished with 13 shots and nine corner kicks, while senior goalkeeper Canaan Newman recorded a clean first 86 minutes in goal before Washington Adventist's late score.
Armijos led the Rams with two goals and four shots, while Valenzuela added a goal and Bascope recorded an assist.
Bluefield returns to action Saturday, traveling to Reinhardt for an Appalachian Athletic Conference tilt slated for 3 p.m.
