WILSON, N.C. -Â The Bluefield University football team put together an explosive offensive showing on the road but ultimately fell to Barton, 36-21, Saturday afternoon at Truist Stadium in Wilson, N.C.
Barton (1-2) struck first midway through the opening quarter, capping an 80-yard drive with a 36-yard touchdown pass at the 6:24 mark. Bluefield (0-3) wasted no time responding. Just ten seconds later, redshirt freshman quarterback Zack Paulk found sophomore wide receiver Marlin Haywood in stride for a 70-yard touchdown on the Rams' first play of the drive, tying the game at 7-7.
Barton regained the lead late in the first quarter with a short touchdown run, then extended its advantage early in the second with another rushing score to make it 21-7.
Bluefield answered immediately. On the first play of the ensuing possession, Paulk connected with senior wide receiver Jamonta Chavis for an 86-yard touchdown, pulling BU within 21-13. Barton returned the blocked PAT for two points, pushing the Bulldogs' lead to 23-13.
Barton added a 12-yard rushing touchdown with 3:00 left in the half to take a 29-13 lead into the break.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Rams opened the fourth with a determined scoring drive. Junior running back Kyree Edwards powered in a four-yard touchdown run to cap a 60-yard march, and Paulk hit Chavis for the two-point conversion to make it 29-21 with 13:57 remaining.
Bluefield's defense forced a fumble on Barton's next possession, but the Bulldogs later added a 45-yard touchdown pass with 2:03 left to seal the 36-21 final.
The Rams finished with 397 yards of total offense, including 352 passing yards from Paulk, who completed 23-of-39 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Haywood led BU with 140 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Chavis added 161 yards and a score. Edwards paced the ground attack with 56 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, freshman defensive back Ezekiel Taylor posted 10 tackles and a pass breakup, while junior linebackerf Elijah Padgett added nine stops. Junior linebacker Andre Plummer recorded six tackles, including two tackles for loss and a sack.
Bluefield returns to action next Saturday, traveling to Greensboro for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
