RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The Bluefield University men's volleyball team earned a road victory Tuesday evening, defeating Rio Grande in straight sets, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23, inside the Newt Oliver Arena.
With the win, the Rams move to 7-7 on the season.
Bluefield turned in a balanced offensive performance, recording 36 kills while hitting .222 as a team. The Rams were particularly strong in the opening set, swinging at a .357 clip to take early control of the match before holding off late pushes by the Red Storm in the final two frames.
Mason Lloyd and Kari Williams once again paced the Bluefield attack, combining for the majority of the Rams' offensive production on the outside. Kemani Riley also provided an efficient presence in the middle, while Richard Cisneros contributed at the net as BU finished with seven total team blocks.
Setter Benedict Somes orchestrated the offense with 33 assists and added four digs defensively to help keep the Rams in system throughout the match.
Defensively, Bluefield totaled 22 digs, with several players contributing in the back row to limit Rio Grande's offensive rhythm. The Rams also forced Rio Grande into 26 attacking errors while holding the RedStorm to a .000 hitting percentage for the match.
BU returns to action Saturday when the Rams travel to Carolina University for a 1 p.m. first serve.
