Chavez Nets Hat Trick, Bluefield Takes Down Washington Adventist 3-1

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Bluefield University men's soccer team notched its first win of the 2025 season with a 3-1 victory over Washington Adventist in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at the East River Soccer Complex.

BU (1-3) took the first two shots of the contest, but it was the Shock (0-1-1) who struck first in the 6th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

Just six minutes later, junior forward Juan Soto connected with freshman forward Adan Chavez for Bluefield's equalizer in the 12th minute, beginning the Roanoke, Va., native's big day.

Chavez struck again in the 21st minute, finishing a long pass from freshman forward Landon Puckett with help from Soto.

He completed his hat trick in the 33rd minute, scoring the first of his Bluefield career and the program's first since Joe Stacey netted three goals against Southern Virginia in 2018. Puckett picked up his second assist of the match, while senior defender Kendell Britt tallied the first assist of his career.

The Rams carried a 3-1 lead into halftime and locked down defensively the rest of the way to secure the win.

Junior goalkeeper Standon Cerda stopped WAU's only shot on goal in the second half and finished with two saves in his first start of the season. Bluefield outshot the Shock 14-5 overall and held a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Chavez has now scored all four of BU's goals this season, while both Puckett and Soto recorded two assists apiece, the first of their careers.

BU hits the road to face Johnson & Wales–Charlotte on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 12 p.m.
