Bluefield Clipped in Season Opener by Greensboro College

BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Bluefield University men's soccer team fell 4-1 to Greensboro College in its's season opener at the East River Soccer Complex Saturday evening.
 
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Rams (0-1-0) responded quickly to start the second half.
 
Junior goalkeeper Canaan Newman recorded back-to-back saves in the 50th and 51st minutes to get up the game-tying goal. Just moments later, junior forward Sebastian Armijos found freshman forward Adan Chavez, who netted BU's first goal of the season to level the score at 1-1.

Then, in the 64th minute, Newman came up big again, stopping a Greensboro penalty kick to keep the match even.
 
Freshman defender Nolvin Vigil and Chavez registered Bluefield's final two shots of the night, but neither could break through. The Pride, however, pulled away with a pair of late goals to secure the 4-1 win.
 
In the opening half, the Rams created early momentum with four shots on goal during a five-minute stretch beginning in the 20th minute. Despite the pressure, Greensboro struck first in the 26th minute and carried a 1-0 advantage into the break.
 
Chavez led Bluefield with five shots, including four on target, and scored the lone goal. Vigil added two attempts, while freshman midfielder Anthony Alvarado contributed one shot on goal. Newman tallied five saves in his debut.
 
BU returns to the pitch August 26 to face Washington Adventist at the East River Soccer Complex at 5:00 p.m.
