Bluefield University softball hit the road Thursday morning for an Appalachian Athletic Conference match-up against Reinhardt University. The Rams showed heart and hustle despite dropping both games of the doubleheader.
Game One: Reinhardt 9, Bluefield 1
The Rams came out swinging in game one as freshman Chloe Dillow put Bluefield on the board early with a solo home run to left center in the first inning. Dillow's blast marked her third homer of the season and gave the Rams an early 1-0 lead against a strong Reinhardt squad.
Senior pitcher Hallie Cox got the start and battled in the circle against a Reinhardt lineup that boasts one of the most powerful offenses in the AAC. Despite the final 9-1 scoreline, Cox showed resilience throughout, and the Rams' defense stayed engaged throughout the contest.
Bluefield added hits from Madison Blankenship and Dillow, while MacKenzie Franklin made several key plays in right field. The Rams held their own against a Reinhardt team that collected 13 hits on the day.
Game Two: Reinhardt 3, Bluefield 1
Game two was a pitcher's duel from the start, with Ali Glover taking the circle for Bluefield and tossing a complete game. Glover gave up just four hits and struck out three across six innings, keeping the Rams in contention throughout the game.
The Rams broke through in the fifth inning when Lauren Jackson singled and later scored on a fielder's choice by Kenidy Harris, tying the game at 1-1. Jackson had an impressive showing at the plate, going 3-for-3 and leading the team offensively in the second game.
Bluefield's defense was clean in game two, with zero errors and several key plays to limit Reinhardt's scoring chances. Though the Eagles plated three runs in the fifth, the Rams kept the pressure on through the final out.
Looking Ahead
The Rams will travel back home and look to face Bluefield State on Sunday, April 13th at 1pm and 3pm.
