Pikeville, KY — Bluefield University Baseball delivered a strong showing in conference play this weekend, taking two of three games from the University of Pikeville in a pivotal road series at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
Game 1: Rams Ride Bats to Series-Opening Win
The Rams opened the series with a 9-6 victory on Friday, thanks to a relentless offensive attack that racked up 16 hits. After falling behind early, Bluefield responded with runs in five of the final six innings, including a three-run seventh and a pair in the eighth to seal the win.
Nick Stergiou led the charge, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while John Greenawalt went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Bryce Medlock also scored three hits and two runs.
On the mound, Joe Gaither started and went five innings, but the bullpen took over from there. Nick Duncan and Tyrone Woods combined for four shutout innings, with Woods earning his fifth save of the season.
Game 2: Rams Drop Tight Battle
In Saturday's first game, Bluefield took an early lead but couldn't hold off a mid-game surge from the Bears, falling 7-3. The Rams plated two runs in the first three innings but were outscored 6-1 the rest of the way.
Andres Vega had a solid game, going 2-for-3 with a run, while Dylan Cutler and Nico Guerra each added RBIs. Bryce Dees turned in 5.1 innings of work on the mound, striking out five.
Despite the loss, the Rams played clean defensively and showed resilience throughout.
Game 3: Bluefield Clinches Series in Finale
In the second game of the day and final game of the series, Bluefield relied on elite pitching and timely hitting to edge Pikeville 3-2 and claim the series. The Rams scored all three runs in the fifth inning, with Stergiou once again playing hero — launching a two-out, bases-clearing double that proved to be the game-winner.
Josh Nielson was stellar on the mound, tossing 5.2 shutout innings and limiting the Bears to just three hits. Tyrone Woods came in to lock down the final four outs, earning his sixth save and preserving the win.
The Rams' defense backed the strong pitching effort with several key plays, helping Bluefield improve to 13-12 overall and 8-7 in AAC play.
Series Takeaway
Bluefield showed poise, depth, and a winning edge throughout the series — getting production up and down the lineup, clutch bullpen performances, and standout efforts from players like Stergiou, Vega, and Nielson. The series win puts the Rams in a strong position heading into the heart of conference play.
