MIDWAY, Ky. – The Bluefield University women's basketball team dropped its second straight road contest to open the season, falling 98–49 to Midway University on Wednesday evening at Marshall Gymnasium.
Midway (3-1) jumped out to an early lead behind a flurry of fast-break points, using an 11–2 run midway through the first quarter to take control. Bluefield (0-2) got on the board with an early layup from Ashanti Northcross and a three-pointer from Maddie Day to cut the deficit to single digits, but the Eagles carried a 24–10 lead after one.
The Rams put together their best stretch of the night in the second quarter. Elle Gunter scored five points in the period, including a three-pointer from the top of the key, while freshman Zoey Snavely and sophomore Katelyn Norman added threes of their own. BU shot 55 percent in the quarter, but Midway's depth kept the home team in front 46–26 at halftime.
The third period saw another Bluefield push, highlighted by a strong defensive effort from Gunter and Northcross, as well as a pair of baskets from Snavely. The Rams continued to battle in the fourth, getting an early layup from Abby O'Quinn and a jumper from Najah Ghani-Perryman. Freshman J'Maia Joseph provided a late spark off the bench with nine points in the final quarter, including a three-pointer and two free throws.
Joseph led the Rams with 14 points and three assists in 20 minutes off the bench. Gunter finished with six points, eight rebounds, and a block, while Snavely added six points and a steal. Northcross and O'Quinn chipped in four points each, and Norman connected on a three-pointer while grabbing two boards.
Bluefield returns to action November 12, when the Rams travel to Pikeville for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
