BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Behind an explosive offensive performance and timely defensive stands, the Bluefield University football team earned a 43-40 victory over the University of Pikeville Saturday evening at Mitchell Stadium.
The Rams opened the game on fire, scoring touchdowns on their first three drives to grab early control. Quarterback Ethan Cash connected with Marlin Haywood for a 28-yard score midway through the first quarter, then added a six-yard rushing touchdown to extend the lead to 13-0. Bluefield struck again early in the second, as Cash found Haywood deep downfield for an 82-yard touchdown to make it 20-0.
Pikeville countered with a quick strike of its own, but Cash's second rushing touchdown and a 20-yard Dylan Ausley field goal just before halftime sent BU into the break with a 30-9 advantage.
The Bears mounted a strong comeback after the half, capitalizing on a series of big plays to pull within one score. Bluefield responded with a sustained 75-yard drive capped by another Cash-to-Haywood connection—a 14-yard strike late in the third quarter. In the fourth, Kyree Edwards pushed the Rams' lead to 43-26 with an 11-yard touchdown run to finish a balanced 82-yard march.
Pikeville continued to battle, scoring twice more to make it 43-40 with under five minutes remaining. BU's offense, however, controlled the clock down the stretch to seal the win.
Cash turned in a standout effort, completing 20-of-31 passes for 395 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 62 yards and two more scores. Haywood posted another career night, hauling in four receptions for 151 yards and three touchdowns. Edwards totaled 136 all-purpose yards, including 106 receiving and 30 rushing, while Jamonta Chavis added 89 yards on five catches.
The Rams' defense made key plays throughout the night, highlighted by Tarell Sablon's interception late in the second quarter. Chris Reynolds and Ethan Walker each recorded a sack, while Anthony Jefferson forced a fumble and recovered another.
With the win, Bluefield improves to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.
The Rams return to action November 1, traveling to Kentucky Christian for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
