Rio Grande, Ohio- In their season opener, the Bluefield University Rams faced a tough battle against the University of Rio Grande on January 28, 2025. Despite a valiant effort, the Rams fell 3-1 in a hard-fought contest.
The match began with an intense first set, where both teams exchanged points in a thrilling back-and-forth battle. The Rams pushed Rio Grande to the limit but ultimately fell short, losing 25-27. In the second set, Bluefield responded with an impressive performance, securing a 25-19 victory behind strong teamwork and strategic execution. However, Rio Grande regained control in the final two sets, taking them 25-16 and 25-19.
Although the Rams did not get the outcome they wanted, several standout performances highlighted the Rams' potential. Mason Lloyd led the team with 12 kills and 5 blocks. Kyle Pietrzak added 9 kills and 2 aces, while freshman Dakarai Williams made an impact in his collegiate debut with 5 kills, 3 blocks, and a team-high 7 digs.
As the Rams move forward, they set their sights on the upcoming Rio Invitational Tournament, beginning January 31, 2025. The tournament will see Bluefield take on strong opponents, including Oakland City University, Sienna Heights University, Park University Gilbert, and Aquinas College.
