Columbia, SC – Bluefield University's women's soccer team endured a challenging road game, falling 6-0 to Columbia International University (CIU) at their home field in Columbia.
From the opening whistle, CIU asserted control of the match. Despite some early defensive efforts, Bluefield struggled to contain CIU's aggressive play. The game saw CIU's Lily Jackson open the scoring with a penalty kick in the 11th minute. Bluefield's goalkeeper,
Autumn Matthews, was kept busy throughout, making several key saves but unable to keep out the continuous barrage from CIU.
CIU added two more goals before halftime, leaving Bluefield in a 3-0 deficit. The second half continued in a similar vein, with CIU extending their lead with three more goals. Bluefield had a few attempts to turn the game around, including shots from
Emily Spaulding and
Moriah Mingo, but none were successful in breaking through CIU's defense.
The loss highlights a tough day for Bluefield on the road as they aim to regroup and address the challenges faced. The Rams will face their second conference opponent on September 11th at Union College, with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
