Bluefield, WV – On a rainy afternoon, the Bluefield Women's Soccer team faced a tough challenge at home against the Milligan Buffalos, who are currently ranked in the top five of the conference. Despite a spirited effort from the Rams, they fell to Milligan with a final score of 5-0.
The match began with both teams displaying urgency and determination. Bluefield's Liberty Wolf had the first shot of the game, a powerful strike that just missed the mark, illustrating the team's aggressive mindset. For the first 20 minutes, the play was evenly matched, with Bluefield pushing the ball up-field in search of scoring opportunities, led by strong efforts from Savannah Holmes, Hazel Parlett, and Sara Cox, who contributed to the team's offensive push.
Milligan, however, quickly demonstrated their offensive prowess, launching three consecutive shots that were thwarted by Bluefield goalkeeper Autumn Matthews, along with a crucial defensive save from Taylor Inocelda-Bihag. The Rams held strong, keeping the score level at 0-0 for the time being.
As the game progressed, Milligan capitalized on opportunities, scoring their first goal and adding two more before halftime, leading to a 3-0 score at the break.
Determined to turn the tide, Bluefield came out strong after the break. Emily Spaulding and Moriah Mingo made several impressive attempts on goal, but their efforts narrowly missed the target, keeping the score at 3-0. Milligan, demonstrating their resilience, countered with more offensive pressure, taking five additional shots before finding the net again.
Despite Matthews' stellar saves and the defensive efforts of Macy McBride, Kaylei Newman, and Annalee Woodson, Milligan added two more goals, sealing their victory at 5-0.
The Rams will look to bounce back as they travel to the University of Pikeville this Saturday, September 28th, to take on the Bears at 1 PM.
