Montreat, NC – The Bluefield University Women's Soccer team faced a challenging match against the Montreat Cavaliers, suffering a tough 4-0 defeat. The Cavaliers dominated the game, outshooting the Rams 40-1 and showcasing their offensive prowess throughout the contest.
Montreat struck first with less than ten minutes left in the first half, as Rebecca Cruz delivered an impressive header that left Bluefield's defense with little chance to respond. Despite the setback, the Rams held strong, keeping the score at 0-1 until 23 minutes remained in the match, when Montreat scored three more goals in quick succession to secure their victory.
Bluefield's defense fought hard and made adjustments to limit the damage, working tirelessly to keep the score as low as it was against the relentless Montreat attack. Goalkeeper Autumn Matthews delivered a commendable performance, making five crucial saves to prevent the scoreline from widening further.
Assistant coach Jacob Key shared his thoughts on the match: "It was really exciting to see the team keep a top-tier conference opponent within one goal at the half. We still have a lot of things to work on; however, this is a marked improvement from last year's 5-0 loss to Montreat. The team is learning a new formation, and we are excited to see continued growth throughout conference play."
The match highlighted the need for improvement as the Rams regroup and look to build on their experience. Bluefield will aim to bounce back this Saturday, September 21st, as they host their next game at 1 PM at the East River Soccer Complex.
