University sweeps State in Battle of the Bluefields

BLUEFIELD – Bluefield University's Hallie Cox tossed a one-hitter to lead the Rams past Bluefield State University Big Blue 8-0 Monday in the first game of a Battle of the Bluefields doubleheader. The Rams completed the sweep in game two with a 9-3 win over the Big Blue. Ali Glover pitched a complete game giving up three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts. For the season Bluefield University won three of the four games between the two schools.
GAME ONE
BLUEFIELD 8, BLUEFIELD STATE 0
INSIDE THE GAME
  • The Rams drew first blood, scoring two in the first inning. MacKenzie Franklin raced home on a ground out for the game's initial run. Jenna Atwell later drove home a run with a single.
  • BU scored five times in the third. The first coming on a single by Kenidy Harris. Three crossed the plate on a bases loaded, bases clearing double by Gianna Sloan-Lebron. The final run of the inning crossed the plate on a State error.
  • Bluefield's final run in the fifth came on a Kaylee Hughes double. The eight-run lead, after BSU batted in the bottom of the fifth, ended the game.
LEADERS
  • Cox allowed no runs on one hit and struck out five to get her fourth win of the season.
  • Franklin and Hughes led BU at the plate with two hits apiece.
  • JoElna Arnold picked up BSU's lone hit.
GAME TWO
BLUEFIELD 9, BLUEFIELD STATE 3
INSIDE THE GAME
  • BU took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on a pair of wild pitches and a run-scoring single by Kenidy Harris.
  • State got on the board in the bottom of the second with a solo home run by Bella Coffman.
  • The Rams added four runs in the third on an error, an RBI single by Breyana Ellet, and a two-run hit by Harris.
  • The Big Blue scored one in the bottom of the third on a run-scoring double by Madison Roland.
  • Bluefield added one in the fourth on a fielder's choice.
  • Bluefield State tacked a run on the board with Coffman's second homer of the game in the bottom of the fourth.
  • BU's final run came on Cam Dilla's single in the sixth.
LEADERS
  • Ellet and Harris led Bluefield with two hits each. Harris knocked in three runs.
  • Glover pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.
  • Coffman led Bluefield State with two home runs and two RBI.
