Rams survive Lion attack

BLUEFIELD – Nathan Herstich scored from two yards out with 25 seconds left and Nehemiah Carter intercepted a pass in the end zone as time expired to lift the Bluefield University Rams to a 50-47 win over the Florida Memorial University Lions, Saturday at Mitchell Stadium.
INSIDE THE GAME
  • FMU took the opening kick and drove the field to take a 7-0 lead.
  • Riley Stubbs' 50-yard field goal put the Rams on the board and made it 7-3.
  • Bluefield took the lead 10-7 on 25 yard pass from Nathan Herstich to Jewels Gray.
  • The Lions retook the lead and led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Rams scored three touchdowns in the final eight minutes of the half to lead 30-21 at the break.
  • Lee and Herstich connected for a 22-yard scoring play in the third to push BU's lead to 36-21.
  • FMU scored 26 unanswered points, the last gave the Lions the lead 47-43 with 4:34 remaining in the game.
  • Herstich capped a 93-yard, four-minute drive with a two-yard touchdown run with 25 ticks left on the clock. Stubbs' extra point made it 50-47.
  • FMU drove the field and Carter picked off a pass in the end zone on the game's final play to give Bluefield the win.
LEADERS
  • Thomas Lee had five receptions for 220 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
  • Nathan Herstich completed 24-of-39 passes for 360 yards and four touchdowns. He ran for two scores.
  • Jewels Gray caught nine passes for 73 yards and a touchdown.
  • Tyrese Wolfe had three pass break ups and an interception returned 90 yards for a touchdown.
  • Quincy Robinson finished with nine tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.
  • Mykkel Banks had a pair of tackles and a fumble recovery.
