BLUEFIELD – Bluefield University softball opened the 2023 season with a doubleheader sweep of Virginia Union University, Sunday afternoon at Graham Rec Park. The Rams took the opener 16-2 and claimed the nightcap 12-4.
Game One
Bluefield 16, Virginia Union 2 (Five innings)
After the Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Rams answered and never looked back.
Chara Wootten was 2-for-3 with five RBIs and picked up her first collegiate home run.
Macy Martin also homered for the Rams and knocked in three runs.
Hallie Cox picked up the complete game win in the circle. Cox struck out 11 and allowed only three hits.
Game Two
Bluefield 12, Virginia Union 4 (Six innings)
Down 4-0, Bluefield scored four runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to pick up their second run-rule win of the day. The Rams got long balls from Martin, Wootten, and
Gianna Sloan-Lebron. It was Sloan-Lebron's first collegiate home run.
MacKenzie Franklin was 4-for-4, Martin 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and
Alexis McDuffie 2-for-4. McDuffie also picked up the win as she pitched the final four innings and gave up only two hits and struck out four.
