Unconventional season wraps up at Faulkner

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The unconventional 2020 football season for the Bluefield College Rams came to an exciting but disappointing end Saturday night as the Rams lost its season finale 42-28 to Faulkner University.
The 2020 season was moved to the spring of 2021 as a result of COVID and the Rams played a schedule comprised of only teams within the Appalachian Division of the Mid-South Conference.
Saturday's game at Faulkner was a tale of two halves. The Eagles built a commanding first half advantage, scoring once in the first quarter and four times in the second to take a 35-0 halftime lead.
The Rams charged back in the second half when Mason Cox entered at quarterback. BC's first score came on Cox's 27-yard pass to Jaquan Ebron with 8:44 to play in the third. Tanner Griffith kicked the extra point. After a Faulkner score Cox passed seven yards to Antonio Strickland for another score. Again Griffith's PAT was good. With 9:24 left in the game DeAundre Jackson rushed across the goal from three yards out. Griffith's extra point split the uprights to make the score 42-21.
Bluefield's final score of the game came with just over a minute to play when Cox passed two yards to Ebron. The kick made it 42-28.
Faulkner controlled the first half, but Bluefield held its own and some more in the second half. Cox, who entered in the third quarter, completed 22-of-38 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns. Strickland caught nine passes for 99 yards and a score, while Ebron had five catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Lowell Patron Jr., and Jackson each had five catches, Patron for 61 yards, Jackson for 26.
Defensively Sam Kirtley had a team-high 12 tackles. Charles Turner had nine stops, and DaMarcus Wimbush six. Neither team had a turnover in the contest.
The Rams finished the season 2-7, 1-5 in games counted as conference games. Both wins came against Union College.
The 2021 season will kick off in less than five months when Thomas More University visits Mitchell Stadium on Sept. 4.
