College falls to State in Battle of the Bluefields

BLUEFIELD – Bluefield College baseball opened its home season Tuesday, Feb. 23 against Bluefield State College in the Battle of the Bluefields at Bowen Field. The Rams took an early lead but in the end Bluefield State took a 6-4 win.
The Rams came out hot jumping to the lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. Ozzie Millet singled to left, and Clay Wisner hit his first home run at Bluefield College to give the Rams a 2-0 lead.
BC added two more runs in the second when Eligah Lewis was hit by a pitch and Jeremie Garcia had a bunt single. A throwing error on the bunt moved them both ahead 90 feet. Lewis scored on a ground out by Joseph Cardona, and Garcia came home on a double by Nate Cobb.
The Big Blues got on the board in the third, scoring single runs on a pair of ground outs to cut the Rams lead to two at 4-2. State tied the game in the fourth on a two-run home run by Taylor Tibbs. BSC took the lead in the fifth on a balk.
State's Austin Stambaugh took the mound in the third and was perfect. Stambaugh did not allow a hit, or walk over the next seven innings.
Bluefield State added a final run in the ninth inning to close out the scoring.
The Rams used seven pitchers in the game, as the squad opens conference play Thursday at Union College.
Jason Downs, working the fifth inning, was tagged with the loss. Stambaugh picked up the win.
BC picked up four hits in the game. Wisner had a pair of RBIs.
The win by Bluefield State snapped Bluefield College's 17-game winning streak in the series over 14 seasons. The teams did not play last season as both schools' seasons ended early due to COVID-19.
