BLUEFIELD - Men's volleyball gained its first win of the season, downing the Thomas More University Saints in five sets Friday evening at the Dome Gymnasium in the finale of a tri-match.
The Rams opened the match with a service ace by Devon Robinson that set the tone for the set. The Rams went up by as many as six and went on to take the opening set 25-19.
Down three early in the second set, BC rallied to tie at 10. Thomas More went ahead by four, but the Rams knotted the set at 23. The Saints scored the final two points to win 25-23.
Bluefield retook the lead in the match in the third set with a 24-17 win, but Thomas More rebounded in the fourth with a 25-16 win to force a fifth and deciding set.
The Rams took control in the final set, rolling out to a 7-2 lead and claiming the 15-7 win and taking its first match of the year, giving head coach Alfonso Alvarez his first win at Bluefield College.
Caleb Word had 36 assists and six digs to lead Bluefield, while Carleek Owens had 13 kills. Robinson had 11 digs and nine kills, while Colby Mutter had a team-high 19 digs.
Earlier in the afternoon the Rams fell in four sets to Lawrence Tech of Michigan. In the middle match of the day Lawrence Tech defeated Thomas More.
The Rams are back in action Monday when they visit Erskine.
