WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Webber International University Warriors held off the Bluefield College Rams in a defensive battle 16-8.
For the third consecutive week the start of the Rams game was delayed by weather, this week it was lightning in Florida that delayed kickoff for nearly an hour. Once the game began, defense controlled the play.Â
Field goals were all Webber could muster as the Warriors claimed first a 9-0 lead before they scored the game's first touchdown to go ahead 16-0.
Bluefield's first score came in the fourth quarter when
Shiloh Ward connected with
Jer'mikal Monroe on a 28-yard scoring play. It was the first touchdown pass for Ward as a Ram and the first TD catch for Monroe at BC. The two-point conversion was good and the Rams were a score away from tying the game midway through the fourth quarter.
With time running out BC was driving for a potential game-tying score, but the Webber defense held on fourth down with just 11 seconds remaining.
Bluefield's defense held the Warriors to 233 yards of offense and only one touchdown in the game.
The Rams' road trip continues next week as they visit NCAA FCS opponent Presbyterian of the Big South Conference in Clinton, S.C.
