Box Score BLUEFIELD - After several postponements and cancellations due to Mother Nature, softball finally played its first home game of the 2018 season, but the weather conditions were far from perfect at Graham Rec Park as the Hiwassee Tigers visited the Rams. The scheduled doubleheader was only a single game as weather conditions forced cancellation of the second game.
In the opener it appeared as if the Rams were charging to victory until the Tigers utilized the long ball and scored three runs in the sixth inning to claim a 10-8 win.
BC took the lead with five runs in the second, thanks to an two-run double from
Lauryn Bailey and a two-run single from
Kaitlyn Pennington. Hiwassee scored three in the third, but the Rams pushed their lead back to five in the fourth thanks to an RBI single from Pennington and a two-run double from
Meredith Throckmorton that made it 8-3. However, that would be all of BC's scoring for the day.
Four Hiwassee home runs, including two in the sixth inning spelled doom for the Rams.
Worsening weather forced the second game of the twinbill to be cancelled.
Pennington finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs. Throckmorton had two runs batted in as did Bailey.
Cameron Pearson suffered the loss for Bluefield in the circle. She worked 5 1/3 innings and had four strikeouts.
Bluefield is now 5-12 and will face non-conference opponent Ferrum, weather permitting, Monday afternoon at 2:00 at Graham Rec Park.
