BLUEFIELD – On a night when Bluefield College honored 14 senior members of its football squad, the Point Skyhawks came to town and escaped Mitchell Stadium with a 14-9 Mid-South Conference Appalachian Division win over the homestanding Rams.
The Skyhawks scored the game's first touchdown in the first period and held a 7-0 lead until the Rams'
Tanner Griffith booted a 41-yard field goal with 7:15 to play in the third quarter. The visitors then extended their lead to 14-3 early in the fourth quarter.
Bluefield's first TD of the game came with 4:02 remaining in the contest when
Cason Whitt connected with
Lowell Patron Jr. on a 27 yard scoring play. The extra point was blocked.
The Rams were not finished as they drove the field in the game's final minutes and with less than two minutes to play were in the Point red zone, but facing a fourth down, a pass fell incomplete in the end zone, turning the ball over to the Skyhawks who several kneel-downs to run the clock out and seal the victory.
Whitt, finished with 15-of-34 completions with three interceptions and a touchdown for 188 yards.
Antonio Strickland was his favorite target with eight catches for 139 yards.
Defensively,
DaMarcus Wimbush had 12 tackles for Bluefield including two tackles for loss.
Devon Jackson and
Michael Everett each had seven tackles.
