EAST RIVER — Bluefield College saved the best for last.
With two goals in the last 64 seconds of Sunday afternoon's game, the BC Rams took a 2-1 win over the No. 8 team in NAIA men's soccer, Georgia Gwinnett College, at East River Soccer Complex.
It was a bounce-back game for the Rams (10-1), who lost their first match of the year on Friday on the same field to Tennessee Wesleyan University. The visiting Grizzlies (6-1-1) absorbed their first loss of the season.
The Grizzlies fired off 19 shots, nine of them on frame, but Rams goalkeeper Sven Kleinhans smothered all but one of the shots on goal.
That lone score came in the 64th minute off a header by GGC's Samuel Sampaio Gomes, who took a cross from Jack Gurr and poked the ball into the left side of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
It looked as if Bluefield might be headed for a second straight defeat until the final moments. The Rams' Duarte Ferreria found the bottom right side of the net at 88:56 into the game for the equalizer.
Only a minute later, BC's Sandro Stalder sent a ball to the top of the 18-yard box and senior midfielder Joao Delgado took it from there. His shot, also to the bottom right of the goal, would provide the Rams with the victory.
The Rams, held to just three shots in the first half, ended with eight shots, six on goal. Delgado and Joe Stacey each issued three shots.
Georgia Gwinnett had seven corner kicks in the game while BC had two. The visitors were called for 17 fouls and were assessed two yellow cards, both in the second half. Bluefield was whistled for 12 fouls.
Matija Gligorovic, the Grizzlies' keeper, recorded four saves.
Bluefield College begins a set of road games on Wednesday evening at AAC foe Milligan College. The Rams' next game at East River is Oct. 4, playing Union (Ky.) at 7:15 p.m.
