BLUEFIELD - A valiant effort came short Saturday afternoon at Mitchell Stadium as the No. 16 Georgetown (Ky.) Tigers held off a late charge from the Bluefield College Rams and claimed a 24-13 win.
Georgetown scored the game's first points, but missed the extra point. Bluefield responded with a 16-yard touchdown run from
Rashad Butler to knot the game. However, the extra point kick was blocked and returned by Georgetown for a DXP and two points, putting the Tigers ahead 8-6. A Georgetown field goal rounded out the first quarter scoring.
The visitors added a score in the second on a two yard run by Jordan Bond and it stood at 18-6 at halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Georgetown pulled ahead 24-6 on another Bond run.
Bluefield rallied in the fourth and the Rams scored when
Walter Harold connected with
Antonio Strickland on a 10-yard pass play.
Tanner Griffith's kick was good to make the score 24-13. The Rams drove in the game's final minute inside Georgetown territory, but could not produce another score and the Tigers ran out the clock.
Harold completed 17-of-32 passes for Bluefield with a touchdown and and interception for 195 yards. DeMarcus Wimbush had 11 tackles and
Andre Evans addede nine.
Reigning MSC Appalachian Division Special Teams Player of the Week
Drake Presley had another outstanding game as he punted nine times with an average of 40.2 yards per kick. His long was 53 yards.
The Rams are now 1-3 and will host Warner University, Saturday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. at Mitchell Stadium.
